Ivory Tower
On the night of Diego's return from
Spain, the Padre arrives unexpectedly at the Vega's Hacienda seeking refuge for Anita and
her young son Paulo and little daughter Margarita. Once again the Governor's men have
struck. His soldiers torched their farm and dragged their father near to death behind
their horses. Sonia and Alfredo Vega gladly give them shelter and Diego, infuriated by
this senseless cruelty resolves to do what ever he must, to fight the Governor. - Zorro is
born!

The Governor instructs the Capitan

Diego slips away from his mother as
she and Hermina Mendez enjoy a peaceful siesta. Moments later he reappears dressed as
Zorro to find the lovely Senorita Carlotta Mendez alone in the garden, asleep in the cool
shade of her rose arbor. Gently he moves towards her and assures her he is no bandit but a
champion of their people and a man of noble birth. Carlotta is excited but skeptical of
his intent until he tells her a story how someday, a noble man with his eyes and smile may
appear and profess undying love.

Diego secretly climbs back up into
the balcony window of his rooms at the Vega Hacienda s after another night of thwarting
the Governors soldiers attempts to terrorize the local peasants . As he strips out of his
Zorro disguise, he overhears his parents arguing in their chambers. His father
disgustedly proclaims his son a lazy and self indulgent fool, a role Diego has adopted to
avoid any suspicions of his secret alter ego.

Father Domonic blessing their union.
