Omar Khayyam

The 11th century Persian astronomer and poet’s classic works provide the golden thread of romance throughout "Z’s" story of Zorro. Persian passion woven with gypsy magic becomes the tie that binds our central characters together. The poems have been treasured and collected from one century to the next and used to whisper words of love in the gardens of delight that all true lovers find. Yet like our hero, Omar was a man of action and served his Sultan loyally in war as well as in peace. The following poems are interwoven throughout the play:

THE RUBYAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM

Count Montero remembering his wife and California
"Here with a loaf of bread beneath the bough,
A flask of wine, a book of verse and thou beside me
Singing in the wilderness and wilderness is paradise enow."

Diego to the unconscious Sergeant
"The mighty Mahmud, the victorious Lord,
That all the misbelieving and black horde,
Of fears and sorrows that infest the soul,
Scatters and slays with his enchanted sword."

Diego about the Counts death
"The moving finger writes,
and having writ moves on.
Nor all thy piety nor wit shall
lure it back to cancel half a line,
Nor all thy tears wash out a word of it."

Diego to himself
"For in and out, above, about, below,
tis nothing but a Magic Shadow-show.
Played in a box whose candle is the sun,
round which we phantom figures come and go."

Zorro to el Capitan
"I make the most of what I yet may spend,
Before I too into the dust descend."

Zorro to Carlotta
"Ah love! Could though and I with fate conspire
To grasp this sorry scheme of things entire.
Would not we shatter it to bits,
And then re-mold it nearer to the heart’s desire."

Carlotta to the moon
"Ah, moon of my delight who know’st no wane,
The moon of heaven is rising once again
How oft hereafter rising shall she look
Through this same garden after me in vain."

Zorro to Paulo
"Tis all a chequer board of nights and days
where destiny with men for pieces plays.

Carlotta’s midnight qoute
"Ah, my beloved, fill the cup that clears
Today of past regrets and fears."

Diego discovered
"Alas, that Spring should vanish with the rose.
That youth’s sweet-scented manuscript should close!
The Nightingale that in the branches sang,
Ah, whence and wither flown again, who knows?"
